Change the first DNS setting on your network card to point to your new DNS server, not the server you are currently demoting. During the first demotion attempt, the demotion failed because either the NETLOGON service didn't stop in time, or didn't return the success code to the stop request, however by the time DCpromo wants to shutdown net logon, help it out.

It's to do with the advertising of domain services in DNS I believe - since the controller's demoting itself, it doesn't trust itself to provide it's own domain services.
